1st August 2009 - Saunton SandsSS 447 376 - On the North devon coast lies Saunton Sands.3 miles of sandy beach is backed by Braunton Burrows. This expanse of sea and sand is a mecca for watersport enthusiasts. These flags are flying for the UK Open Surfboat Championships. The UK Surf Rowers League say that he sport originates from Australia and the surf rowing boat came to the UK in 1965. The league was set up in 1999 with 4 Cornish teams. In the 1920's these boats were used to rescue bathers in trouble. Today the RNLI lifeguards have jet skis. Further along the beach are kite surfers. The ribs of this kite are inflated to make them rigid. To the other side are the surfers. |
