3rd September 2009 - Allied Air Salute - PlymouthOn the 70th aniversary of the outbreak of World War II an Allied Air Salute was held on Plymouth Hoe.Unfortunatley a wreath drop was cancelled due to the high winds. However there was a small display on the Hoe. Some WW2 military vehicles. In the sound Brittany Ferries Amorique keaves for Roscoff and a submarine makes its passage into Devonport dockyard. Crowds on the Hoe watched an Air Se\a Rescue demonstration with Plymouth RNLI lifeboat and a Rescue Sea King from RAF Chivenor. A RNLI crew member has fallen overboard. A smoke flare marks his position as the Sea King makes its run in. The "man overboard" is winched into the Sea King. A green flag on the lifeboat signals it is safe to lower the casualty to the lifeboat. There is a tremendous wash from the rotors downdraft. So the Sea King keeps to the rear of the lifeboat. RAF search and rescue Sea King's are painted yellow unlike the "Ace of Clubs" Red and Grey of their Navy cousins from Culdrose. The Sea King and Lifeboat make a high speed pass accross Plymouth sound at the end of the demonstration. |
