18th May 2008 - Battle of Stratton re-enactmentThe English Civil War came to Cornwall in 1643, when the roundheads under the command of the Earl of Stamford crossed the River Tamar and occupied a hill by Stratton.Each year the Sealed Knot society re-enact the battle of Stamford Hill. Stamford hill is just to the North of Stratton, which in the 17th century was a thriving small town. The invaders numbered 5400 roundheads, with 200 horsemen, 13 cannon and one mortar. Royalist forces led by Sir Ralph Hopton and Sir Bevill Grenville set out to reclaim the hill, now known as Stamford Hill. They had 3000 men, light infrantry and small canon. The Cornish flag was at the head of the troops. The Royalist musketeers advance The Roundhead troops take up the defence. Flags and drummers rally the troops. The roundhead canons fire. and the roundhead musketeers return fire. the roundheads defend the hill. |
