2nd June 2010 - Polperro.SX 210 510 - Just 4 miles to the West of Looe lies the quaint fishing village of Polperro. The village is in a narrow valley where the streets and houses are tightly packed together. The entrance to the harbour is through a small inlet. There are tidal gates at the entrance to prevent flooding from high tides. Fishing boats and pleasure craft use the outer harbour. Traditionally Polperro was famous for Pilchard fishing. Today the small fleet catch shellfish, scallops, pollock, crabs and lobsters. Polperro was also infamous for smuggling in the 18th centuary. Pleasure boats offer trips along the coast. They pass the sail lofts on the coast path. |
