26th September 2009 - Zapcat Racing - Watergate BayHeat 14.Watergate bay near Newquay is the venue for Heat 14, the final heat of the Zapcat racing season. Saturday's heat also sees the final of the King of the Surf championships. There are two divisions and 6 teams line up for each heat. At the end of the day there is a final for each division. From a shore start the Zapcats head out over the surf, turning at a bouy to run parallel to the shore, turing again to head inshore before a final turn running parallel to shore again, but this time closer to the beach. There are five laps in each heat. If a boat looses it's pilot, co-pilot or both the race is stopped and then restarted after the Zapcat has been recovered. Red flags stop the race as the Zapcat and crew are recovered. These are images from the days heats. |
