16th April 2009 - Menacuddle

SX 01100 53200 There is a hidden jem just off the B3274 north of St Austell, no more than half a mile from the town centre.

Menacuddle could mean a stone or rock wall, or maybe the place of Irish monks, either way there is a well and small bapistry next to a small waterfall.

Originally built in the 14th/15th century Admiral Sir Charles Swale restored the bapistry as a memorial to his son who was killed at Ypres in the first world war. The stream takes on a milky colour as it carries china clay waste, from the workings higher in the valley, down to the sea.

I always make a point of going to this spot in April, just as the Rhodendrums are in flower.
