16th June 2007- Looe Lugger regatta - amOrganised by the Cornish Lugger Association, this biennial celebration of surviving sailing luggers meets in Looe, Cornwall.2007 is the eleventh regatta, and our local luggers are joined by luggers from further afield including Brittany, France. Just after 9am the luggers start to leave the harbourside at Looe, and make their way down river. My vantage point today is on the Banjo Pier East Looe. With an on shore wind and no engine, then the only way is to row. At the river mouth we go side on! And safely out into the bay There are several classes, Class A for luggers over 30-ft and Class B for the smaller inshore open boats. They move towards the starting line for the mornings race. The sails of a lugger are distinctive with the different coloured topsail tags. |
