7th July 2007- West PentireSX 774 607 - On the west side of the Gannel estuary and Crantock sands is the headland of West Pentire.Managed by the National Trust the fields on the headland are left for "arable weeds". In late June / early July Corn Marigolds ( also known as Irish Mollies ) and 3 types of Red Poppies grow in profusion. The coastal view is terrific enough and the carpet of flowers on enhance your experience. The trouble is how to handle the situation and create an image you like. Whilst these two flowers dominate, if you look around we can find individual species such as the field pansy, lesser snapdragon and the night flowering catchfly. A west wind was blowing making it difficult to keep the flowers in focus. I tried to isolate a single poppy. The small Vugga cove hugs the cliffs at the end of Crantock Sands. On the other side of the Gannel is East Pentire Head, behind which is Newquay. Please keep to the paths to prevent the flowers being trampled. These images were taken around 7pm. On the other side of West Pentire head is another cove Porth Joke, known by the locals as Polly Joke ( chough's cove ) after the Cornish chough. Though I am not sure there are any pairs around here |
