3rd May 2009 - Thundercat beach racing - Looe bayThe second day of the Looe powerboat event has the Thundercats beach racing event.From a shore start the pilot and co-pilot jump into the Thundercat, start their engines and off they go. Based on a 400 meters X 200 meters 'M' circuit that has five turn buoys including a chicane. The sea front and banjo pier provides amazing viewpoints as the Thundercats negociate the course. This close action racing produces an adrenaline sport that is exciting and thrilling for both racers and spectators. There are two classes P750 Standard and Blue print. Unlike Zapcats different makes of hull can be used and the ribs are powered by 50hp Tohatsu engines. The design encourages the boat to plane quickly across the water allowing the hull to ride on a cushion of air bubbles. This reduces the wet surface and lubricates the contact between vessel and water The driver and co-pilot has to move aroud to balance the Thundercat as it negociates the tight turns. One of the turns was right next to the Banjo Pier. Once around the bouy the next turn is the chicane. The a straight leg accross the bay. Before turning onshore alongside Tom Barbers rocks.
