12th July 2008 - Interlaken
Known as the gateway to the Jungfrau, Interlaken ( between the lakes ) lies between Thunersee and Brienzersee - Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.
The main street goes between the two lakes and in the middle is the Hohe-Matte central park.
One of the main attractions in Interlaken is the Harderbahn funicular which takes you up to the Harder Klum. Unfortunately for us today it is in cloud so we cannot experience the panoramic views of both lakes and the Jungfrau.
You can walk between Interlaken West and Interlaken Ost railway stations in 30 minutes.
Ther are many hotels.
From the 18th floor restaurant of the Hotel Metropole we get a panoramic view of Interlaken.
Crossing North over the river Aare we enter Unterseen, Interlaken's old quarter.
We walk back along the south bank of the river Aare.
At Interlaken Ost we wait for the train to Lauterbrunnen.
The train for Bern is on platform 5.
The Lucerne train arrives on platform 4.
The train from Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald arrives on platform 2.
The train splits at Zweilutschinen so we must get into the right carriage, the first 6 are to Lauterbrunnen and the last 6 go to Grindelwald.
