5th November 2009 - Seal Bay conservation park, Kangaroo IslandSituated on the south coast of Kangaroo Island, Seal Bay is a South Australian nature reserve.Seal bay is home to a colony of Australian Sea-lions "Neophoca cinerea". There are board walks leading down to viewing areas just above the beach. Looking down onto the beach we can see the sealions lazing around on the sand. Baby sealions wait for mothers to return from fishing for their next feed. When they are hungry the sealions go out to sea for fish. When full they return to the beach to sleep of the feed. You are only allowed down onto the beach if accompanied by a guide. Even then you are asked to keep a distance from the sealions. Along with fur-seals, sea-lions belong to the eared seal family, or Otariidae. They differ from true seals, or Phocidae, by having external ears. Sealions can propell themselves through the water with their front flippers. and they are more agile on land as they are capable of "walking" on all four flippers. |
