16th August 2006 - British fireworks festival - PlymouthFor several years Plymouth has hosted the British fireworks festival. For two nights in August 6 teams provide thousands of spectators with fantastic displays. Using Mountbatten breakwater for the displays, crowds line Plymouth Hoe and Jennycliff to watch. Plymouth Sound is full of small boats looking for a spectatular viewpoint.At the start of the Wednesday display, Dr Roy Lowry of the University of Plymouth attempted to break the "40,000 rockets in five seconds" world record held by Terry McDonald from Jersey, with the simultaneous firing of more than 57,000 rockets. Taking two and a half hours to check them, 56,649 rockets were loaded by 6pm. The verification of the world record by the Guinness Book Of Records came two months later after watching a video recording of the record attempt.
