9th March 2008 - St Pirans Play, PerranporthSW 7685 5638 - Each year on the Sunday closest to St Pirans day, the people of Perranzabuloe celebrate St Piran with their annual pilgrimage and play.Beneath a concrete cross the play begins. Legend starts in Ireland where the Irish King rules. The king becomes worried about the activities of Piran. He instructs his soldiers to arrest Piran. A millstone is tied around Piran's neck. Piran is thrown over the cliff into the Irish Sea. The villagers are distraught as Piran is banished from Ireland. The procession moves on to St Piran's Oratory. Legend has it that Piran floated accross the Irish Sea on the millstone and came ashore on Penhale Sands where he built his Oratory. Piran introduces the Cornish to christianity. He heals the sick. Tin is discovered and there are calls for Cornish unity. Perran Tremewan has played Piran for the last six years. |
