26th January 2008 - Minions - Cheesewring, the Hurlers and Daniel Gumb's CaveSX 2597 7108 - A walk from Minions to Cheesewring Quarry.Starting at Minions on Bodmin Moor we walk North towards the Cheesewring Quarry. On the side of the quarry we can find the remains of Daniel Gumb's cave. Moved from the middle of the quarry this is all that remains of a stone cutters house. Daniel Gumb was fascinated with astronomy and geometry. We can still see the triangle and squares of Pythagorus's theorum carved into the roof stone. Cheesewring Quarry is on the south side of Stowes Hill. On the top we can find flat rock formations in the shape of cheeses, which gives the largest stack the name "Cheesewring". Looking North we can see Brown Willy, the highest Tor on Bodmin Moor. Stowes Hill is an ancient pound and here we can see the stone walls circling the North side of the hill. This is the cheesewring on the right hand side. The Hurlers are three stone circles. c1500bc the circles are Bronze Age. Legend tells that men playing with a hurling ball on the Lords day were turned into stone. To the West we can see Houseman's Engine House, which now houses a small exhibition on this area. |
