St Giles is one of the fourteen, so-called 'auxiliary' saints, invoked especially by cripples, beggars and blacksmiths.
In the Middle Ages his cult was popular among the rural poor.
There are three altars at Saint Giles.
The earliest written evidence for the existence of a church in Matlock dates from 1291.
