SS19 Ripple and FY519 IBIS are leaving the outer harbour.
FY519 IBIS does not have an engine fitted.
The crew have to use the long oars to manoeuvre the lugger away from the quay walls.
IBIS was built by in 1930 by Percy Mitchell in Portmellon. She was one of the largest luggers worked by Eddie, Archie and Dick Lakeman out of Mevagissey.
Outside the harbour the crew raise her sails.
IBIS is 42’ in length, 13’ beam, and has a 6’ draft.
IBIS holds the record for the largest catch of Pilchard ever landed by a Cornish Drift Netter (2346 Stone)
and the largest catch of Turbot, long-line caught, from the Ray Pitts (English Channel) in July 1952 (896 Stone).
SS19 Ripple is already under sail.
The luggers sail into Mevagissey bay.
On the quayside the local Air Training Corps squadron entertain the visitors.
Richard Ede clains to be the last remaining fisherman to use and make traditional willow crab pots.
